Trip Overview
The 7-day Kathmandu Valley Rim mountain biking is a diverse and exciting way to view the Himalayas and mid-hills with minimum altitude and hardship. The trail, while requiring a good level of endurance, offers a variety of experiences that will keep you excited and engaged. Starting from Thamel of Kathmandu, following towards the famous hill stations and holiday villages Chandragiri, Chitlang, Markhu, Hattiban Resort, Balthali, and Namobuddha, and dense mid-hill forests, you ride through the rural settlements and towns of Tamang and Newar culture.Â
The trail also offers some attractive historical buildings and temples, adding a unique cultural element to your adventure. These cultural experiences will not only keep you excited but also leave you intrigued and fascinated throughout your journey. The first day of the ride takes you to Chandragiri, which is also considered one of the highest points in Kathmandu. The second day of the ride is provided with a unique luxury stay at Hattiban Resort, where you will experience the natural stay and enjoy the fresh food from the farm, riding along the semi-smooth trail of Kulekhani.Â
The ride to Balthali from Hattiban Resort can be very challenging as the day is longer than other days. You must climb long to Lakuri Bhanjyang, followed by a long pedaling section to Namobuddha. This section of the trail is more demanding, so be prepared for a challenging ride.
Kathmandu Valley Rim trail is suitable for both endurance performers and soft riders as it allows you with low- altitude, making it easier for fast riders to push the limit and the beginners to go as slow as they can with no risk of catching a cold or getting lost in the wilderness. However, it’s crucial to note that the trail can be challenging, and riders should be prepared with adequate water, food, and protective gear. Rest assured, our experienced guides will be with you every step of the way, ensuring your safety and enjoyment. It is the best way to explore the rural villages and observe the lifestyle and culture of Nepal, especially people living around the hills.

Today's ride is a unique adventure, following Chandragiri, navigating through the alleys and highway of Kathmandu, and climbing a long uphill, followed by a mix of off-road and paved roads to Markhu through Chitlang. Chitlang, a delightful holiday village with extensive farmlands, is home to a cottage cheese factory, a visit to which is a must for any cheese lover. The challenging and rewarding journey ends with the sight of the pristine Kulekhani Dam, spread over Markhu. If you're still filled with energy and time, a visit to the nearby Mohini Jharna (waterfall) on the other side of the dam will add another unique experience to your adventure.
Following Kulekhani Dam, the trail starts with a gradual climb and some flat off-road sections. There will be a few climbs in between. The trail today has 70% black-topped road. As you descend towards Hattiban, you will enjoy the view of winding green hills and farmlands in Dakshinkali. The endpoint of Hattiban Resort welcomes you with a natural stay in a luxurious way inside a forested area. Unwind in the peaceful serenity of the resort and rejuvenate your senses with the delicacies served.
Today will be the longest ride compared to other days. Today, the trail will have 60% black-topped road and 40% off-road and jeep track. You will have a long climb to Lakuri Bhanjyang followed by a long descent and a few up-down sections until you reach Balthali. The village is located behind the historical town of Panauti and has a comprehensive view of terraced potato farmlands and massive hills. You can also see a faint view of the Himalayas towards the north.
The trail from Balthali to Namobuddha is mostly a black-topped flat and downhill trail that passes between the small towns and farmlands. It will be a relaxing day compared to previous days.
