Everest Three Pass Trek

Trip Overview

In the splendor of the Khumbu region runs one of the most desirable yet challenging treks, the Everest Three Pass trek. This trek will let you overcome the three most thrilling High Passes of Everest: Renjo La at 5360 m, Cho La at 5420 m, and Kongma La at 5545 m. Additionally, there are two more important points that you will tackle on this journey: the gorgeous Gokyo Ri at 5383 m and Kala Patthar at 5550 m.

If you dream of a strong trek in Nepal without the need to conquer the great Himalayan peaks, then the Everest Three Pass trekking trail is undoubtedly for you. This trek provides you with great emotions and unforgettable moments. You will see four Himalayan giants – Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Thamserku and many more.

You will also experience small mountain villages with their friendly inhabitants, unforgettable landscapes, iron bridges suspended high above the valleys, lush vegetation, and the absolute lack of it after crossing the zone of eternal ice.

Regarding our Everest Three Passes trekking, we have planned the program so that the route is not repeated on the way back. Our route will run almost in circles, allowing you to limit the duration of your hiking. We will take the clockwise direction, overcoming first the challenging Renjo La Pass, then Cho La Pass, saving the easiest Kongma La pass for the last.

This route will give you enough time to acclimatize, offering you the most beautiful views of mountains from different angles. However, when choosing this trek, make sure to be prepared for long hikes and demanding approaches. But do not be afraid of any technical difficulties requiring the use of climbing techniques, for example. Because you all need trekking poles on the entire route through three passes.

Are you ready for the emotional and thrilling adventure of your life? Join us. We have opened bookings for our Everest Three Pass trek for 2024 and 2025.

From Phakding, we will immediately start to climb and walk into the woods and cross the Dudh Koshi River a couple of times. Past the villages of Toktok and Benkar, we reach Monjo. Past Monjo, the path becomes steep till we arrive at Namche via Jorsalle.

The town is a pearl in the valley, a small center in a large amphitheater, teeming with life. Kusum Kanguru, Kongde Ri, Thamserku, and Everest will bestow their glory upon you in this village.

There are many options for spending our first acclimatization day today. We can climb 300 m and go to Khumjung, the largest in the Khumbu Valley. Or you can hike for 3 hours to Everet View Hotel to enjoy the most luxurious breakfast with precious views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.

In the afternoon, we can walk towards Kunde (3840m), where we will pass under the enormous rock pyramid that dominates the plateau: it is Khumbila, a sacred mountain that the Sherpas adore and apparently have never climbed out of respect.

After enjoying our time, we will return to our lodge and spend the night.

We will reach the peaceful village of Taranga, then Marlung, which is distinct with its houses with stone slab roofs. From here, we climb for a while and reach Langden. Later, we may walk to the small lake Renjo at an altitude of around 4,500 m.

Leaving early in the morning, we will undertake a steep climb, walk along the extensive yak pastures, and cross small lakes. Once more, the path becomes steeper till we reach the mountain lake of Angladumba Tsho. From here, we will climb the sheer cliff for a few hours and reach the top of the Renjo La Pass.

Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dudh Pokhari Lake, and the entire village of Gokyo with the massive Ngozumba glacier open up in front of our eyes.

Enjoying the views for a while, we descend towards Gokyo first by fairly steep slopes, then by steeper slopes gently as we approach the lake. Wee can see the Lobuche, the Cholatse, and the Taboc on the horizonhe.

Before dawn, we will march to climb the Gokyo Ri, which is considered the best viewpoint in the Everest region. After about 2 to 3 hours of ascent, we will be at the summit of Gokyo Ri, from where the stunning vistas of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, Island Peak, and the serene blue Gokyo Lake open up.

Spending some time in the serenity, we now descend to Nha, hiking along the lateral moraine of Ngozumba glacier. We will then follow a well-marked path along various glacial lakes to reach Nha.

With the backdrop of Ngozumpa glacier, we move forward along the steep,, stony,nd dusty trail towards Cho La Pass. It will take us about 3 to 4 hours hiking to reach the top of the Pass. The traditional hanging of prayer flags and the magnificent Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Lobuche welcome us at the Pass.

Time to go down and cross a small glacier under the eastern side of the Pass. Then, we will hike down steeply towards Dzonglha, located above the glacial lake of Chola Tsho and between Cholatse and Lobuche peaks.

We will once again walk along the Everest Base Camp Trail today. But first, we will hike down to the Cho La Valley and walk along the Chola Tsho Lake. Soon, we will reach the Khumbu valley and walk alongside the Imja Khola River. We will arrive at Lobuche shortly after we reach the junction of the Khumbu and Lobuche glaciers. From Gorakshep, the trail divides into two: one leads to Everest Base Camp, and the other leads to Kala Patthar. We will choose the first path which will lead us to Everest Base Camp.We return back to Gorekshep for overnight sleep after visiting Everest Base Camp.

Another very beautiful Himalayan day with the passage of a new high-altitude pass, the Kongma La. We will cross the lower part of the Khumbu glacier, then go up the slope towards the pass. The winding path is sometimes steep, and you feel the altitude again.

The views from this pass wedge between Makalu, AmaDablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse wow us once again. However, we cannot waste time; the path is still long and sometimes complicated due to the rocks and scree. So, we will descend to Chhukung  where we will have dinner and stay for the night.

  Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

   Tea House

It is a delightful day as we will pass through various traditional Sherpa hamlets of the Khumbu region. The trail is mostly downhill through the dense and charming rhododendron forest. Past the villages of Dingboche, Orsho, Shomare, and Pangboche, we will arrive at Tengboche, known for its magnificent Gumba, where the Mani Rimdu festival takes place every year in October.

  Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Frequently Asked Question

The Everest Three Pass Trek is a challenging trek that is not for the faint of heart. Trekkers will need to be in good physical condition and have experience trekking at high altitudes. The trek involves crossing three high mountain passes (Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La) that are all over 5,300 meters (17,000 feet) high. Trekkers will also be spending several nights at high altitudes, which can lead to altitude sickness.

The best time to do the Everest Three Pass Trek is during the spring (March-May) or fall (September-November) seasons. These times of year offer the best weather conditions, with clear skies and little rain. However, it is important to note that the trails can be crowded during these peak seasons.

Trekkers should have experience trekking at high altitudes (above 4,000 meters) and be in good physical condition. The trek involves a lot of uphill walking, so trekkers should be comfortable hiking for several hours each day.

While it's possible to trek independently, hiring a guide and/or porter is recommended for safety, navigation, and to ease the physical burden. Guides are familiar with the route, and porters can carry your heavy backpack.

Altitude sickness is a common problem for trekkers in the Everest region. The higher you go, the greater the chance of getting altitude sickness. There are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of altitude sickness, such as ascending slowly, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking acclimatization days.

The Everest Three Pass Trek typically takes around 16-20 days to complete, depending on the itinerary and acclimatization days included.

For the Everest Three Pass Trek, you will need permits such as the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit.

The highest altitude reached during the Everest Three Pass Trek is at the top of Cho La Pass, which stands at approximately 5,420 meters (17,782 feet).

Accommodation during the Everest Three Pass Trek ranges from basic teahouses to more comfortable lodges in popular trekking villages along the route.

A good level of physical fitness and stamina is required for the Everest Three Pass Trek due to its challenging terrain and high altitude.

While some lodges offer Wi-Fi (for a fee), it's unreliable. Local SIM cards may provide phone connectivity in certain areas, but be prepared for limited communication.

Charging facilities are available at tea houses, but they may charge a fee. It's advisable to bring a power bank and extra batteries.

Teahouses and lodges along the trail provide basic accommodation. Rooms may be shared, and amenities are basic. It's advisable to carry a sleeping bag for added comfort.

Yes, it's highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking, medical emergencies, and evacuation.
