Peaky Peak Trek

Trip Overview

The Pikey Peak trek offers an unforgettable experience traveling through lush green hills full of aesthetic scenes and spots. Being a part of the Everest region, it has quite a competitor (EBC trekking), but despite EBC being an option, the Pikey Peak trek is adored by more people.

One of the major cultural highlights of the Pekay peak trek is to visit Thupten Choling Monastery at Junibesi village. The history of Thupten Choling Monastery traces back to the 1960s, a turbulent era for Tibet. Amid the chaos of the 1959 Chinese invasion, the esteemed lama Trulsik Rinpoche, along with a large group of followers, including nuns (anis) and monks, fled from Rongbuk Gompa in Tibet. Seeking refuge, they journeyed to the Khumbu region. For several years, Rinpoche and his followers found temporary shelter in various monasteries, including Chiwong, all the while holding onto the hope of returning to their homeland. It was in 1968 that Rinpoche, with the support of donated land near Junbesi, founded Thupten Choling, establishing a new center for spiritual practice and community. We will spend about 2 hours here watching Buddhism practice and hot lunch served by monastery.

The reason for its popularity lies in the fact that the trail is one of the most beautiful hilly trails you will ever be in. The nature there is untouched and with little human interaction.

During the spring season, you will find wildflowers here and there, which makes the trek even more aesthetic. You will also be passing through multiple villages and settlements that are equally beautiful, if not more. These villages are known for their cheese and Yak milk. Both of which can be enjoyed with morning tea.

The main reason behind the success of this trail is the fact that it is not crowded like many of the trekking trails in Nepal. As you make your way up, you will make your way through an alpine forest with beautiful white mountains in the background; it doesn’t get better than that.

Along with being a nature lover’s dream trek, this trial also offers a cultural experience as we will be meeting the locals of different villages, interacting with them, and trying to understand where to come from, what their values are, and so on.

We will be passing through and staying at different Sherpa villages throughout our trekking duration. This will give you enough time to taste their food, see their culture, and understand their lives to some extent.

The Pikey Peak trek extends for a total of 10 days, during which you will reach a maximum elevation of 4065 meters at Pikey Peak and walk through hills, forests, and snow to reach the ultimate destination. You will be able to view Mt. Everest in all its glory while also having a clear view of Annapurna, Lhotse, Manaslu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga.

Compared to most other treks, it falls in the short trek category as we will not have to trek for a long distance. Compared to most, it is also a budget-friendly option, but that does not mean that it is any less exciting and fun than the others. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful treks you will ever be a part of.

In addition to that, not many people travel this route, which makes it a perfect option for those who prefer a personal trekking experience. Even at certain lodges, you might be the only guest.

With that being said, here’s a detailed article on our Pikey Peak trek. Here, you will find every little detail to help you consider taking this trek.

Kathmandu is a city that has to be explored at least once in your life as it has so much to offer. Our guide will take you on a sightseeing adventure to a bunch of attractions Kathmandu has to offer. These attractions are not just for show, these are historically, religiously, and culturally important for the people of Nepal.

People of different religions, beliefs, and values are attracted by these buildings and sites because they are a part of the culture, not just religious sites for certain religious followers. As we visit site after site, our guide will let you in on the importance and history of the site. Most of these sites are UNESCO heritage sites that are conserved and protected.

A few of the attractions will require tickets to visit, but we will take care of that as a part of the Pikey Peak trekking package. Any drinks that you get during the sightseeing tour will not be covered by the package, we are only responsible for daily meals.

We will spend the day sightseeing and also take care of all your meals for the day. From day 1 of this trek till the very end, we will be responsible for providing you with meals (breakfast,  lunch, and dinner) every day.

Meal: Breakfast/Accommodation: Hotel

On the third day, we will finally be traveling to our main event. Dhap is a beautiful little village located in the Solukhumbu region that serves as a starting point for our Pikey Peak trek. This village is located 230 km away from Kathmandu, which will take us about 7 to 8 hours to reach by Jeep.

Dhap is known for its beautiful man-made lake surrounded by tall green hills on all sides. This artificial lake was opened to the public in 2021, 6 years after it began construction in 2015. This lake is an effort to clean the water of the sacred Bagmati River.

We will be staying at Dhap for the night, where you will be served a delicious Nepali dinner.

Meal:Breakfast,Dinner/Accomodation: Tea House

Jhapre is another small village in the Solukhumbu region and serves as the main stop for travelers from Dhap. It will take us about 4 to 5 hours to reach Jhapre; we will cover a total distance of 13 km on this day.

To enter the conserved area of Solukhumbu region, there are a number of legal permits required. First off, you will have to pay the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Entrance Fee, get the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card, and get the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit.

These permits might seem like a big hassle but worry not, as we will be taking care of these for you as a part of the Pikey Peak trekking package.

Our porters will help you with your luggage, while our guides will be responsible for keeping you on track. He will be the leader of the pack and make decisions on accommodations, stops, and meals based on mutual agreement and preferences.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner/Accommodation: Tea House

Jhapre to Pikey Base Camp is just 13.73 km far, but since we will be trekking on rough trails, ascending our way up to the base camp, it will take us about 6 to 7 hours to reach our destination.

Passing the beautiful ridge of BhulBhule, we will the Pikey Base Camp, where we will spend some time letting the beauty captivate us. Make sure that you take lots of pics; memories last forever.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner/Accommodation: Tea House

One thing that we recommend to everyone is not to miss the sunrise and sunset views from the Pikey Peak. We will start our trek early morning as we will cover long distances today. First off, we will trek to reach Pikey Peak, where we will stop for a bit, catch a breath, and trek towards Traktor.

Traktor is a small settlement that houses a couple of lodges for travelers to rest. It will take us about 7 to 8 hours of trekking to reach Traktor from Pikey Base Camp.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner/Accommodation: Tea House

After spending the night at Traktor, we will have a healthy local breakfast and move towards Junbesi. It is a beautiful Sherpa village full of typical Sherpa houses and stunning natural surroundings. We will be having our lunch in Junbesi.

One of the main attractions of this village is the 400-year-old monastery in the middle of the village. This monastery has captivating Thanka paintings all over its walls, while a huge Buddha statue is placed in the middle of the room.

After lunch, we will visit the Thupten Choling monastery, an acclaimed monastery of the region founded in 1968. It has an interesting story behind it. Back in the 1959 Tibet invasion by China, an important lama named Trulsik Rinpoche fled from Tibet to the highlands of Nepal, looking for a place to live in the upcoming days.

Trulsik Rinpoche of the Rongbuk Gopma, Tibet, reached the Khumbu region of Nepal along with a bunch of followers, including monks and aanis (female lamas). After years of living in the Khumbu region, he decided to establish a monastery; he was funded a piece of land for the project, which he gladly accepted. We will be spending the night at a lodge in Junbesi.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner/Accommodation: Tea House

After having a filling breakfast at Junbesi, We take almost half day exploring around Junibesi village. After half day relaxing or exploring around we will start moving towards Phaplu. Phaplu is a town at the end of the trail and offers a lot of amenities that you might have missed during the trek.

It will take us about 3 hours to Phaplu, where you can taste authentic, delicious Sherpa food for the last time during this trek. Certain hotels in the area bring in local dancing groups and musicians to entertain their guests. If you want to see Sherpa dance, you should probably ask us beforehand so we can make the arrangements.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner/Accommodation: Tea House

After breakfast, we will be leaving for Kathmandu. You will not have to trek today; our Jeep will be there to pick you up in the morning. From morning it will take almost 8 hours to get back to Kathmandu.
